SHIRODHARA

Shirodhara is a classic Ayurvedic therapy or the practice of slowly and steadily dripping medicated oil or medicated decoctions on the forehead. Pouring of warm herbal oil on the forehead in a continuous stream. Shirodhara therapy induces a relaxed state in the mind as well as the body. Shirodhara therapy is very effective in promoting sound sleep and reducing stress. Shirodhara also reduces the level of stress hormones such as Adrenaline and Noradrenaline and thus relaxes the mind. Shirodhara is usually practised in the morning or evening. It is subtype of Murdhatail. Depending on the ‘Dravya’ (medicated or non-medicated liquids), it can be called as Tailadhara, Takradhara, Kashayadhara and Jaladhara. Shirodhara massage treatment begins with Abhyangam. You need to lie down on prone position on the massage table with closed eyes and relax your body. Shirodhara starts with the pouring of about 2 litres lukewarm oil continuously as a stream on to the forehead in an oscillating manner. The time duration of Shirodhara treatment may extend from 45 to 60 minutes depending on the disease. General oils used are Ksheera Bala Tailam, Chandani Tailam,Dhanwantharam Tailam, Narayana Tailam, Triphaladi Tailam etc. according to condition. According to Ayurveda, Shirodhara treatment uses medicated oil, milk-based solution, herbal decoction, or aqueous formulation. It depends on the therapeutic benefits required. It helps in Activating Intuition, Improves Sleep, Reduces Stress, Pacifies Elevated Vata Dosha, Improves Cognitive Abilities, Memory loss, Poor concentration, Chronic headaches, Stress, Depression, Mental tension, Hypertension, Facial Paralysis and Degenerative conditions of the brain, etc used in these conditions.
